Genesis Wildlife Sanctuary has a new home on Eagles Nest in Banner Elk thanks to the philanthropic contributions by Dan and Arlene Schmidt and John Turchin, developer of The Lodges at Eagles Nest.

The unveiling of the new three-acre habitat will take place on Saturday, May 23rd at 2 pm at the sanctuary?s new home at the base of Eagles Nest mountain. Mr. Turchin donated the land for the sanctuary?s new home. Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt?s generous contribution of $150,000.00 has made the construction of the sanctuary?s new home a reality. Artist/conservationist Chris Williams along with Alan Holcomb from Moss Creek Designs and Barry Sugarman have donated the designs for the first of the new habitats within the sanctuary, each one reflecting the individual species? natural environment. The new name of the facility will be The Dan and Arlene Schmidt Animal Habitat operated by Genesis Wildlife Sanctuary in honor of its benefactors.

Founded by Leslie Hayhurst, retired ICU nurse, in 1993 Genesis Wildlife Sanctuary is a non-profit, tax-exempt, all volunteer facility dedicated to the rescue, treatment, rehabilitation and whenever possible release of injured, abused, or orphaned wildlife. All permanent wild animals at the Sanctuary have disabilities that prevent their release back into the wild. All birds require state and federal permits to reside in captivity with each species residing in outdoor aviaries far exceeding federal guidelines. The Dan and Arlene Schmidt Animal Habitat is open to the public everyday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is strongly committed to the education of the public about wildlife and the human interaction with it. The Lodges at Eagles Nest in partnership with The Dan and Arlene Schmidt Animal Habitat will continue their year round fundraising efforts to maintain and operate the sanctuary. All tax-deductible contributions, donations and grants are welcomed to this worthwhile cause.

The Lodges at Eagles Nest is a year round luxury residential community offering a full range of amenities and services for the discerning homeowner seeking the best in all around quality of life.
